Challenges

The Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand faced numerous challenges in monitoring and managing coal mining activities in the northern region of the country. These challenges included the need for real-time monitoring of environmental factors, detection of landslides, tracking of mining vehicles, and monitoring of underground water pressure and arsenic levels. Additionally, the authority required a comprehensive IoT infrastructure capable of collecting and analyzing data from various sensors and devices deployed across the mining area.

Our Solution

To address these challenges, Stream implemented a comprehensive IoT solution and platform with a real-time dashboard for the Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand. The solution comprised seven key components:

 

  1. IoT Infrastructure: Utilizing LoRa-WAN technology to establish a robust and scalable IoT infrastructure for data collection and transmission.
  2. Landslide Detection: Deploying high-accuracy GPS technology and solar-powered sensors to detect landslides in real time, enabling proactive measures to mitigate risks.
  3. GPS Tracking for Mining Vehicles: Implementing GPS tracking devices on mining vehicles to monitor their locations and movements, ensuring efficient operations and safety compliance.
  4. Arsenic Detection: Integrating arsenic detection sensors to monitor groundwater quality and detect potential contamination risks.
  5. IoT Data Logger for Piezometer: Installing IoT data loggers on piezometers to collect underground water pressure data, enabling accurate monitoring of groundwater levels and trends.
  6. Weather Station: Deploying weather stations equipped with sensors to monitor environmental conditions such as wind speed, wind direction, CO2 levels, dust levels, and rainfall.
  7. IoT Devices for Heavy Machines: Installing IoT devices on heavy machines such as water pumps and conveyor motors to monitor their performance and ensure timely maintenance.

Key Achievements

Stream’s IoT solution enabled the Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand to overcome various challenges and achieve significant achievements:

 

  • Enhanced Environmental Monitoring: Real-time monitoring of environmental factors enabled timely interventions to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Improved Safety: Early detection of landslides and tracking of mining vehicles enhanced safety for workers and reduced the risk of accidents.
